I like to focus on the practical application and aural aspects of instrumental learning as well as the technical skills. I invest heavily in listening and understanding as opposed to the largely 'by rote' style I was subjected to growing up! Whilst I will follow a student/parents desired path regarding exams, I will provide a rounded musical learning and experience that will enable students to excel in all endeavours and be creative, as well as pass exams. For me the most important thing is to keep the students motivated. If that is not the case they won't do their part when they go home to practice. Sometimes I explain the theory and practical use of some exercises that in the beginning look tedious or exhausting so that the students can have a bigger idea of how the structure of music is created. Clarinet and saxophone are melodic instruments. Read More

A few years down the road I started playing trumpet in the beginning band at my school under the tutelage of who, to this very day, I believe was the best youth band director to ever hold a baton. Since then I have had many teachers who have shaped my life many different ways. They spent the time to grow and cultivate my skills and talent, teach me musician's etiquette, and give me “the tools of the trade”. Read More

Again, as a teacher my goal is to be honest and responsible to everyone's improvement in music. Nothing makes me happier than to see people I teach reach greater heights and even achieving skills that surpasses mine. As a person, I will support you through your obstacles at my best and try to answer all your questions with clearity and honesty. However, it is essential to note that regardless of how much I can teach you and point out your weaknesses, it is up to YOU to decide how far you will go. Read More

I always say that rhythm is more important than the notes. Play the right rhythm and the notes will come instead of playing every right note while sacrificing rhythm. I encourage students to make their mistakes loud, proud, and in rhythm so everyone has a better idea of what needs to be worked on most. I also emphasize isolating parts to practice and working backwards. Example: play the last two bars of the song until comfortable with it, now play the last 4 bars, last 6, last 8...etc., whole song. Making sure that the student is having fun, learning and achieving their musical goals is most important. I understand that each student progresses at their own pace and has diffrent goals and desires. While there are certian excersises that everyone needs to work on, solos and concert pieces are what students are drawn to. Therefore, I make sure that students are working on fun and challenging pieces that will keep them engaged in music. Read More
