I taught my first trombone lessons when I was still in high school, and I've always felt a strong connection to teaching (my parents are teachers too). When I was getting my masters, I began teaching beginning brass classes at local elementary schools, and this expanded into several elementary band classes upon graduation. If the students already had books from prior music instructor, we pick up from the last lessons after answering questions to make sure the students thoroughly understand the previous lessons from the previous chapters. For beginning students, I've used the Mel Bay's modern bass and guitar methods, James Bastien piano library, Essential Elements for wind instruments, Advanced Rock drumming and Master theory books by Charles S. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage my students by setting realistic goals and proving homework after each lesson to perfect for the next lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a student desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. It is essential as a brass player to focus on hearing the sound in your mind, training your ear, and allowing your body to produce the result without intervention.  To train students to hear the sound, to learn to play with others, I believe strongly in demonstrating examples on the trombone for the student, playing things back and forth, and sometimes playing together.      Read More
