Due to my experience working with multiple grade/age levels, I have learned to carefully fine tune my teaching strategy for each individual student that I work with. At the beginner level I typically work from method books to ensure a solid development of performance fundamentals. I also like to spend a good bit of time establishing successful warm-up and practice routines. With intermediate level students I continue with more challenging method books as well as standard musical excerpts and etudes. Read More

For beginning trombone students, I typically work with the Rubank Elementary Method (old, but it works well), the Emory Remington Warm-Up Studies, and various material that I compose to help a student overcome their weaknesses. Scales make up a major part of any student's learning, and once a student masters the basics of the trombone, I move on to appropriate solo repertoire based on the student's progress and interests. Collaborative--I like to inspire students with the potential sound of this beautiful instrument--the trombone is unlike any other instrument, and the success or failure depends on the internal drive students are willing to apply. So keeping them motivated and inspired is the most important thing here, and I take that very seriously. I find that constantly hearing how it can and should sound is one of the best ways. I am uniquely able to expose them to not just recordings, but live, working examples of great trombone players. Read More

I want my students to have a very strong foundation in all musical elements while still being able to relate and experiences music in their own way. For beginning students, I would definitely start them in a beginning method book whether it be Essential Elements or Standard of Excellence. It is important for every student to have a basic grasp of all the musical elements- rhythm, melody, harmony, form, and expression. Read More

My brass teaching method is based on correct breathing, posture and tone development. I believe a beautiful tone is the most important product we have to offer. Embouchure development comes with careful, purposeful practice in all ranges and at all dynamic levels. I also emphasize sight reading as an aid to becoming a well-rounded musician. Building personal confidence is one of the best ways to overcome performance anxiety. The method books I use are written by outstanding brass musicians such as Max Schlossberg, J. Read More
