I believe that a strong foundation is essential for steady progress and confident performance. A comprehensive approach is my preference. Therefore, when I teach piano, I prefer Faber and Faber Piano Adventures paired with A Dozen a Day for added technique. Since many students in this school district are in band or orchestra, I usually use Essential Elements for Strings, Brass, and Woodwinds. I spend a reasonable amount of time preparing my students for our recitals and many of them join in the group songs, which have included "What a Wonderful World", "Happy", and currently "The Theme From Midnight Cowboy". Goals are an essential part of teaching. Students need something to work toward and I want those goals to be realistic and motivate the student to work towards them. Having a basic outline of a lesson plan is important and so is the flexibility to adjust it to fit the individual needs of the student. My goal is not to have the best playing students, but to have students with the most growth in their own abilities. Read More

Ten Tour Tips For Bands Hitting The Road This Summer

...of getting into huge trouble on the road. Lucky for you, I’ve got ten great tour tips to help keep you fed, safe and sane this summer.   I’ve spent the better part of my twenties playing tiny clubs, sleeping on floors and eating peanut butter and honey sandwiches. I’ve played clubs in cities as big as New York and San Francisco and as small and historic as Fargo and Savannah. I’ve had the best and worst times of my life while I was on the road, sometimes within the same tour, and I’ve learned that there’s definitely a right... Read More

While these songs represent a fraction of potential soprano audition repertoire, they will provide a starting point for any auditionee new to the process:   The Younger Soprano “There Stands a Little Man” from Hansel and Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck (English/ German) “When I Have Sung My Songs” by Ernest Charles (English)   The Italian Standard “Bel piacere” by George Frideric Handel “Quella fiamma” by Benedetto Marcello   The German Standard “Nacht und Träume” by Franz Schubert “Widmung” by Robert Schumann The ... Saxophone Fingering Chart

...as the “gateway” into the altissimo register. But, that’s more of an advanced concept. Similarly, there is a fingering for high E, which is this fingering plus your left hand ring finger.   The provided saxophone fingering chart is in no way an exhaustive resource. Even the alternate and extra fingerings just explained don’t provide a full list of possible saxophone fingerings. The fingerings on the provided saxophone fingering chart will most likely be the fingerings you use 90-100% of the time. However, with time and experience, you may figure out some more possible alternate fingerings that work well for you.   Most other fingerings ... Read More

Types of Saxophones

...so you can recognize the different types of saxophones by seeing them and by hearing them, and so you can pick out which saxophone is right for you.     The Four Most Common Types of Saxophones There are several types of saxophones. Since its original development and subsequent production, there have been numerous changes made to the saxophone. Because of this, many saxophones have been phased out or have become obsolete.   The modern versions of the saxophone are either Bb or Eb transposing instruments. This means that, on a Bb instrument, when you play C, the note sounding ... Read More

Types of Saxophones

...Michael Brecker, and Clarence Clemmons.   Baritone Saxophone The bari sax is the largest of the four main saxophones. It’s an Eb instrument. It has some cool applications in jazz and funk music. Some well-known bari players include: Gerry Mulligan, Pepper Adams, and Gary Smulyan. The ranges I’ve written out are approximate. It’s common for a bari sax to have a low A, although some are only pitched down to low Bb. Some altos have low As, but it’s not very common. Most altos, as well as tenors and sopranos, are pitched down to low Bb. The upper register of the ... Read More
