For beginning students, around ages 5-9, I start with easy songs, but also teach them how singing works. I like to teach technique, and help students improve in their singing. Once students have grasped the fundamentals of singing, I'll let them start looking at solo repertoire so they can practice for a recital performance. Each student progresses at their own pace; therefore, I don't impose "deadlines" as to when a student should advance to the next level.  A lot of that comes from the individual's motivation and reason for learning the instrument.  During a lesson, I go over concepts in a given piece, help discover where more difficult passages will be, and show the student the techniques needed to master those elements.  The main part of the lesson, however, is on the STUDENT...and by that I mean PRACTICE to prepare for the next week's progression. I believe that half of the joy of making music is sharing it with others. In 2011, I graduated from Howard Payne University with a degree in music education, where I often performed lead roles in production spanning from "Bye, Bye Birdie," to "Gianni Schicchi." I am currently pursuing an advanced degree in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy from UTSA, and am projected to graduate in Spring 2015. Before the first lesson I always like to inquire with the student (Parent/Guardian) if the student has taken lessons in the past, in order to better teach, and assign practice material. However, if a student has never taken lessons before, I recommend to young students the Alfred's Basic Piano Lessons Book 1, and for my adult students I will send supplemental materials via email, but also encourage that they purchase in the future, "Essential Piano Repertoire" Level two by Keith Snell.
