While studying at Campbell, Joshua served as the Principle Bassoonist in the Cape Fear Symphony and Principle Trombone in the Campbell University Wind Ensemble. He was also a member of the Campbell University Percussion Ensemble, Campbell University Guitar Ensemble, Campbell University Jazz Band, Campbell University Pep Band (playing Mellophone), and served as a Student Conductor and Student Composer/Arranger for multiple Campbell and community ensembles. I have performed in many Musical Theater productions- Most recently Mrs. Lovett in Sweeny Todd, Operas- performing roles like Cinderella to The Queen of the Night, and I frequently perform with a rock and roll band here in Greensboro, NC. I teach harmony, rhythm, technique, melody, and basic sight reading by a two fold approach. First is to really feel into the music. This means learning to listen deeply with curiosity, intention, respect, and joy bringing the meaning of play into every aspect of learning. The second part is to begin with the basics of music theory by grounding fully into the fundamentals. I believe many students look at a piece of music that seems too difficult and become too overwhelmed to realize that's it's not as difficult as it may first appear. By breaking down music into its components, pitch, rhythm, dynamic, articulation, etc., and tackling each item one at a time, students who thought of music as a strange and foreign language begin to see it as something that just works and makes sense.
