As natural as a singing voice can be it still takes effort and hard work to maintain your sound or keep yourself relevant. I self taught myself a lot. Through this self teaching I was able to help others go through the same process a little easier. I spent hours if not shut ins (days of just soaking and singing) editing and correcting my tone. Developing and finding your voice (confidence in yourself), knowing your sound/ style, and finally finding your rhythm to where even if there is no beat you can become one and be the beat is the basics before any singer can bloom. I began teaching 2 years ago during my undergrad years and fell in love with sharing the joy of music and singing. As a young kid, taking lessons myself, I constantly was seeking to learn different types of music and always felt like I could never find the right teacher who could help me expand my musical knowledge in the ways I wanted. Because I have a background in instrumental music, I truly believe in the importance of a foundation in theory, ear training skills, and music reading. Read More

For beginning students I like to teach basic techniques. Scales, breathing, knowledge etc. Once the student starts to get comfortable with the beginning stages I introduce songs that I believe will challenge their voice. I listen, critique, and offer knew options of note placement & tone. My goal is not to change the way the student sings but to enhance it and clean it up. For adults I like to do my own scale that I have created that open the vocal chords and increases range both low and high. Read More

A vital part of developing voice repertoire is exploring various interests and styles. I encourage all vocalists to choose songs that they will enjoy singing, but I will guide my students in exploring any realm otherwise not explored. I encourage healthy singing and practicing techniques that will ensure productive rehearsal without fear of vocal damage. A professor of mine used to always say, "there is no singing without acting", and I ensure that when a student sings a song, they will not only know how to sing properly, but they will also have a deep understanding of what they are singing about and how to convey the message. I mainly use my own performing experience as a method to teach. I developed my own style throughout the years of performing...what works and what doesn't. But its all about experimenting, and getting out of the box. As a jazz singer, it's all about this. But I have studied classical and opera in college, so I have the knowlege of proper singing techniques, breathing techniques, etc. So with the combination of vocal experiences, there is a time and place for each type of singing, and I will pass that along to my students.
