For five years prior to moving to the city in 2017, I taught choir one of Iowa's largest and most diverse high schools, where I also served as the competition musical theatre coach. Additionally, I have been a voice teacher for 8 years in total, with students rising to high levels of success in state, university/college, and regional singing competitions. When time allowed, I performed in numerous regional plays and musicals, as soloist for professional choral/orchestral ensembles in the area, and often served as music director and vocal coach for university, community, and high school productions. For students aged 3-6, I ensure to use visual materials. I also try to give the student time at the end of the lesson to improvise, which ensures ending on a positive note.-Students aged 7-13 always a quick Q&A regarding music studies in school if they are participating in the school's music program. They are also given scale exercises to ensure a solid knowledge of the major and minor scales.-Students 14+ are given the opportunity to express particular interests and goals that they are specifically trying to reach. As with most of my own studies, I try to adhere to the classical style of training. I will also adjust as to the student's individual needs. Of course with everyone, we will increase vocal range and experiment with what areas of style need more work than others, for example some may need to work harder at belting than head voice, and so on. The most important things in my opinion are warmup techniques, breath support, examining correct space, finding the lift in the soft palate, and letting go of any tension, especially in the jaw area, as it is not a part of the process! Nothing makes me happier than having the opportunity to share my love of music and guitar. Upon graduating from Skidmore College in 2000, I was accepted to Florida State University to the classical guitar program under the study of Bruce Holzman. I feel my decision to simultaneously work towards two masters degrees speaks clearly for my motivation and passion towards music. While I focused on music theory/composition for my PhD studies at Louisiana State University, I continued performing newly composed works by graduate composers for the instrument. Read More

As a teacher I tailor lessons to my students. I find that some students are motivated by learning challenge, and others are energized by fun elements. I pay attention to the needs of my students and make sure they feel proud of their accomplishments and progress.
