I use a contemporary song based music system so my students are learning songs they like, while getting the fundamentals of music. Read More
Instruments: Piano Violin Viola
I'm well trained in the Suzuki repertoire and philosophies, however I teach a combination of traditional methods and also have the ability to exclude one or the other. For beginners and young children, I teach note reading simultaneously but separately from the applied side of playing. Holding the violin and bow, for example, are very challenging and require time to focus on them individually. Note reading is done on the side and later these aspects merge so that kids are eventually learning new pieces by reading the music directly. Read More

I've been teaching for over 10 years now and I truly enjoy helping my students get more out of themselves. I started on classical piano at a young age, then played a whole lot of guitar focusing on the likes of Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix and more, before joining marching band and jazz band diving deep into drums. In College I started playing bass in bands in Manhattan, and I believe it's this transitions of hopping to many different instruments, starting on the piano, that makes it easy for me to relay the main musical concepts to my students that overlap through all of these instruments. It's all about the student's interests. I first gauge what styles they are interested in performing, and then implement the proper methods of teaching those styles. Depending on their ability level, I will simultaneously implement necessary techniques while generating the repertoire so that when it comes time for a recital, they will be ready. Lessons will generally begin with warmups, followed by choosing pieces to perform or developing pieces that have already been chosen. Read More
Instruments: Piano
My lessons include a combination of popular beginners methods, such as Leorard, Giraffe, Dose of the Day, etc. combined with musical games that teach musical theory and sight reading. I will often write music for my students— short pieces that highlight skills they are working to improve— which is something they really enjoy. Finally, I always include lessons about music history whenever introducing a new piece or composer to my students, so that they begin to understand the musical and cultural context of everything they play. Instruments: Piano Organ Synthesizer
I am a very, very patient teacher, and have a particular affinity for shy and otherwise withdrawn students. I share some of those attributes, so I know instinctively how to work with them. For some of us, music becomes our native language, and it affords entry into the more difficult worlds of social interacton. For more advanced students, I can offer many years' worth of advice on how to prepare for auditions to music academies, conservatories and summer festivals. Read More

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
It is all about committing 1-2 hrs a day to practicing. Consistency is the key to steady progress. It is sometimes difficult to stay focused and or motivated. It's also difficult to find time in your schedule to practice everyday. So if you can find at least and hour or two of free time, you will be able to steadily work on your instrument. You have to factor in the time to also just play your instrument freely for the pure sake of having fun. I also think that staying inspired is a great way to keep up our motivation and interest in our instrument.
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
If your child is asking about getting an instrument than it's probably time to consider looking into starting lessons. If anyone, especially a child, has interest in music it should always be supported and encouraged. Music helps children with social skills, self esteem, mathematics, problem solving, etc...just to name a few positive benefits. In fact, I'm not sure of any negative aspects of music!
Music is the gift that keeps giving. Even if your child is young he/she can gain so much from a musical experience. Whether that's seeing a concert or meeting with a teacher 1 on 1.
When will I start to see results?
Results are all based on meeting specific goals. I think of progress as a slow and steady method. There will be moments when new ideas are easy to understand and easy to play on the instrument. At other times in our progress the results may seem to take more time.
But, unfortunately, results are really based on the students ability to understand the lesson mentally. Then the student must put in the personal time to practice the lesson at least one hour a day. Which is just a safe guard in case you miss a couple days, which happens, even to professionals like myself.
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
I wouldn't say it took someone to inspire me to go into music. I knew at a young age that I wanted to pursue music. Although I can say I did have a lot of positive people who supported me. My parents were especially encouraging when it came to music. I heard a lot a sad stories of kids hoping to study an instrument but their parents refused to allow them to pursue anything related to music or the arts.
I did have a couple teachers in Middle School and High School who actually wrote special permission slips for us to leave lunch/recess or study hall to play music together in the auditorium.
