As a teacher, I like to focus on each students needs as becoming a well rounded musician.  I like to work from a few method books including Arbans, Rubank, and Schlossberg for building up your embouchere as a trumpet player.  We will focus in on technique, embouchere building, jazz improvisation, and music theory. I always encourage my students that if there is a piece of music they would like to learn, bring it to the lesson and we will work on it. Read More

As I’ve said above, as a teacher, I live for the “ah ha” moment. When a student is working on something, particularly something challenging, and they finally “get” it. Whether it’s a scale, a favorite song, a technique exercise, or a complex piece of music, there’s that moment. The moment it comes together and makes sense. It suddenly “clicks”. The pride and happiness and sense of accomplishment in this “Oh!” or “ah ha” moments is all over their faces. Read More

Above all, I want to see my students develop the kind of love for music that can foster and sustain a life of appreciation and self expression. I enjoy seeing my students grow into their artistic selves and pursue their own musical interests with their newly aquired skills. Following my students musical tastes is a great way to motivate and encourage them while instilling the technical training they need to be great musicians. Read More

It is a rewarding experience when you have the opportunity to see your students blossom and grow in their talents. I look at every student as a unique individual, with the potential to achieve his or her particular goal. I think it is important to find the method or approach that works best for each individual. I set realistic goals and reasonable expectations for my students and establish a comfortable climate in which to learn and try new things. Read More

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
It is all about committing 1-2 hrs a day to practicing. Consistency is the key to steady progress. It is sometimes difficult to stay focused and or motivated. It's also difficult to find time in your schedule to practice everyday. So if you can find at least and hour or two of free time, you will be able to steadily work on your instrument. You have to factor in the time to also just play your instrument freely for the pure sake of having fun. I also think that staying inspired is a great way to keep up our motivation and interest in our instrument.

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
If your child is asking about getting an instrument than it's probably time to consider looking into starting lessons. If anyone, especially a child, has interest in music it should always be supported and encouraged. Music helps children with social skills, self esteem, mathematics, problem solving, etc...just to name a few positive benefits. In fact, I'm not sure of any negative aspects of music! Music is the gift that keeps giving. Even if your child is young he/she can gain so much from a musical experience. Whether that's seeing a concert or meeting with a teacher 1 on 1.

When will I start to see results?
Results are all based on meeting specific goals. I think of progress as a slow and steady method. There will be moments when new ideas are easy to understand and easy to play on the instrument. At other times in our progress the results may seem to take more time. But, unfortunately, results are really based on the students ability to understand the lesson mentally. Then the student must put in the personal time to practice the lesson at least one hour a day. Which is just a safe guard in case you miss a couple days, which happens, even to professionals like myself.

Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
I wouldn't say it took someone to inspire me to go into music. I knew at a young age that I wanted to pursue music. Although I can say I did have a lot of positive people who supported me. My parents were especially encouraging when it came to music. I heard a lot a sad stories of kids hoping to study an instrument but their parents refused to allow them to pursue anything related to music or the arts. I did have a couple teachers in Middle School and High School who actually wrote special permission slips for us to leave lunch/recess or study hall to play music together in the auditorium.
