If the lesson is with a beginning student I work mostly on technique and when I feel the student is ready we move on to repertoire. Once I find out their level, I take things one step at a time. I always do warm ups, and exercises based on wha t they need work on. I am patient with the students but I do expect them to come prepared. If they do well, I will absoutely let them know, and if they need to work on something, I politely let them know. The only reason I'm still pursuing music today is because i love it and i want to encourage others to do the same. Guitar/Ukulele/Banjo: I like to teach guitar, banjo, and ukulele like I was taught, which is through an exploration of music that the student's already like. I start with basic technique, then move towards chords and other chord shapes, then we would move to more technical tablature. there would be a lot of opportunities to practice compositional skills and improvisational skills. More recently I have had the pleasure of conducting several masterclasses in China, where I was made an honourary professor, University of Toronto and Gordon College in Massachusetts. There are hormonal, physical, and emotional changes in those early teen years that respond well to the lyrics and stories told in many contemporary songs. I've taught lessons for a total of 8 years in New York City, Boston, and Midwestern Illinois. I've taught all kinds of students: children, teens, college students, adults, and retirees. Each student has come with their own goals and passions, and I enjoy helping each individual uncover, free, and develop the natural voice within. In addition to setting each student up with a solid vocal technique, I've taught basic music and vocal health to young children (ages 5-7), developed music reading skills in teens and young adults, helped retirees improve technically so they can better contribute to their community choirs, and even instructed a folk singer in improvisation, songwriting, and healthy folk vocal technique.
