My teaching experience began in spring 2008 at a local church where taught piano drums classes as a music instructor to students ranging from ages 5-18. Throughout college I was a piano and voice instructor at the Boys and Girls Club Music Clubhouse in Boston MA where I continued teach students ranging from ages 10-18.For the past three years I have continued to provide private instruction and tutoring for students of all ages.I find that my students have a much more pleasurable learning experience, when they are able to apply what they learn in ways that are meaningful to their desire and aspirations.I've always encouraged my students to uphold a positive work ethic and mindset when embarking on their musical journey. I studied in Physics, Astronomy, Engineering, and Mathematics, but music and teaching have always been in my life, teaching students throughout high school and college at UGA as a second job. I took trips to Mexico over the summers from 2002-2005 playing music for children and students in between manual labor mission work. I tailor a student's curriculum to their musical goals and needs, while making sure that I am instilling the fundamentals needed for pursuing music at the college scholarship level. Often this means scales, chords, arpeggios, music literacy, performance practice and listening skills. To accomplish this, I use standard materials that are often available online and are used by college and University music programs around the world. For beginning students, I always start with technique and posture, as improper technique can be catastrophic to your playing down the line. From there we'll cover the basics, such as chord shapes, strumming patterns, and scales. On top of that, each student will receive a "riff of the week", a guitar riff from a song that is in line with their particular music tastes. For rock and pop music, I find that there are a wealth of songbooks available. For students interested in classical guitar, I like using Christopher Parkening's guitar method; it contains a great deal of useful information and diagrams, as well as a great selection of beginner pieces.
