My teaching method depends on what the student wants to learn, if they prefer to start learning songs first that is fine but I will still make sure to cover basic music principles in early lessons and incorporate them into the lessons. I can also start with method books but I have found that students don't always want to start there. For students that want a well rounded approach I will combine one of the common method books with simple songs and chords that the student can get going on right away. Read More

My passion for teaching is borne out of a love for connecting with others, fostering curiosity, and sharing my love of music. I hold a Master of Music from the Peabody Conservatory, which I earned in 2006, and I studied with jazz guitar great Paul Wingo for several years after that. I have studied with some of the finest classical guitarists in the world, including Manuel Barrueco, David Russell, Roland Dyens, Ray Chester, William Feasley, and many others. Read More

While I am a classically trained musician, I believe that a student will best learn when presented with material that they are passionate about. A student's curiosity will drive learning far more than any other source, so any directions I can help foster in a student, I will take that opportunity. If students are struggling, I have a wealth of resources and materials of my own which I can offer for new routes of study, or lesson plans to stimulate learning. Read More

My first teaching experience was in 2009 as a music tutor at Schenectady County Community College where I helped students with music theory and ear training while earning my Associates degree in music. Also at this time I began teaching private students the electric bass guitar. At SUNY Fredonia I began teaching double bass lessons to non-music majors focusing equally on classical, jazz, and folk traditions. Since then I have worked at Peabody as a Graduate Teaching Fellow and was part of the Junior Bach outreach program, learningto teach music theory, ear training, analyisis, musicianship, and composition, including the use of notation software like Sibelius. First and foremost, I love the performance and the expressive aspects of music, and I transmit this enthusiasm to my students. I also adapt my teaching to each individual, allowing the student to make an emotional connection to what they are learning and to apply that emotionality back into their playing. Understanding what the student wants and is interested in is the utmost priority in my teachings. I am supportive and positive at the same time that I present surmountable challenges that motivate students to do their best. Read More

I have been teaching upright and electric bass lessons to students of all ages and skill levels for nearly twenty years, and have a Masters degree in Music Performance and String Pedagogy from Northwestern University. Some of my favorite teaching experiences come from my time on the faculties of Dickinson College and the Performing Arts Institute of Wyoming Seminary. Students of mine have completed Bachelors degrees in music from top conservatories and gone on to successful full time careers. Read More

I use a variety of methods: tablature seems to be the preferred method for most guitarist/ukulele students. It's easy to learn. The 'tab' method allows me to teach more current music. I also use method books by Mel Bay and Hal Leonard and other method systems that apply to the particular student. I use whatever is available as far as teaching materials whether it be a method book or magazine lessons. Read More
