For beginning students, my main goal is to lead them to appreciate and love music for the rest of their lives. I work on fundamentals like the proper posture, developing good ears for correct tones, and how to correctly hold the bow. A perfect understanding of basics goes a long way. My favored teaching material for beginner student is Suzuki books, Popper etudes, Galamian scale book, Dozauer book, and all standard common concertos and sonatas. Read More

All students are encouraged to find level-appropriate pieces (that don't have to be classical!) they wish to play, and I will do my best to help them achieve their request and can provide suggestions as well. I try to incorporate songs and tunes outside of the classical genre into my assignments to keep students' practice sessions fun, and for students interested in learning non-classical cello, we can work together to create a curriculum that fits your needs. I believe a major key to success in learning music is finding the methods and concepts that click for you. There are infinite ways to think of a phrase or harmonic relationships and I work to learn which connections make sense to you. One major takeaway from my own education has been how to listen to my playing objectively and free of self-judgement. I constantly encourage my students to develop a similar mindset, since I see self-encouragement as much more important than encouragement from a teacher or an audience. Read More

I strive to cultivate in all my students a lasting love for the art of music in whatever form it manifests in them. Finding what about the instrument is inspiring to the student is paramount to keeping both of us engaged in the process. As a teacher I challenge my students to explore the joy of making music with their instrument and to chase that which cultivates joy in their playing. Read More

Teaching should never revolve around the notion that "perfection" is the ultimate" goal. This way of thinking not only provides my students with a false sense of hope, but more importantly is simply unattainable. In the modern age of playing, too often do I feel students losing sight of what is most important: the music. While good intonation and rhythm are certainly important, what I hope to instill in each of my students is a level of understanding far beyond learning the "notes" on the page. Read More

I will share fun and efficient ways to practice so that you get immediate results. If desired, I also guarantee you will be playing a blues and improvising within a maximum of 6 weeks as long as you practice at least 10 minutes, three times a week. You will have the option of playing along with recordings minus your part so that you can experience the joy of ensemble playing early on in the safety of your own home. I love creating small ensemble groups of students at similar levels and arranging concerts at regular intervals. Read More
