My Student Teaching semester granted me the opportunity to work with elementary and secondary levels; starting beginners and working with students preparing for district band as well as college careers.  It was nice to work with this range in age and skill level, whether they were aiming for career goals or simply playing for fun! If I recommend a piece that the student does not enjoy playing or is too difficult for them, I will accommodate their choice and give them a piece that better suits the student. For non-beginning players, I will look at the pieces they are already playing, and assist them in skills that still need work on their piece. After the piece they are already working on is better, I will assign more pieces and studies that will not only help them with skills that need work, but also improve the skills they are already great with. I believe fundamental techniques are super important for students to advance their music. I also pay attention to what students are interested in. The teacher should come up with a teaching method that will balance the different needs of the students. I'm most comfortable working with beginner to intermediate students, ages 7-11. Initially, I will provide my students with an assessment to learn more about the student's interest and performance level. Subsequently, based upon the assessment results, I will provide my students with a series of warm-up exercises designed to support proper posture, breathing and the overall handling of their respective instrument for every session .
