Instruments: Piano Guitar Drums Mallet Percussion

I began teaching 19 years ago and as one drum student grew to two, then to the occasional piano and guitar student, I eventually was teaching 35 students weekly.  I've been lucky in that I have taught such a wide variety of ages and skills.  I've taught actors to drum for roles, writers the lingo of the jobbing musician, and family bands pop songs for the school talent show.   I've always been open to scheduling whatever is easiest for the student, and I'm happy to do in-home lessons but since I began teaching the technology has advanced substantially. I have found that showing instead of telling comes across really well in teaching. I like to break things down and make sure a student isn't wasting time trying to get something new. I make them set reasonable goals in the moment till they feel like they can walk away having something new under their belt. To me one of the most important parts of showing a student something new is explaining why they should learn it or why they should do an assignment and how they can apply these things to real musical situations. Instruments: Drums Bass Guitar Music

By nature of being a performing musician at a various churches, I have had contact with many youths over the years that are eager to learn music in order to join the worship band. I have a private studio that allows me to teach students individually on a set of live drums and bass guitar. I am well versed with individual, private lessons, in addition to group or paired lessons that can instead focus on theory, concepts, and interpersonal musicianship. Read More

Instruments: Drums

For beginning students who are young, I usually start with just a snare drum. Learning stick holding and striking technique, and then move onto adding pieces of the drumset to play on. From there, I go onto introducing learning note values, and drum music reading. For adults, I may start the same way, but also discuss what they would like to focus on. I really like to imply the fundamentals of contemporary music, and what is typically used on well known recordings. Read More

My teaching style is based fully on understanding the goals and dreams of each individual student. I like to develop a plan to get each student to a level of proficiency in which they can direct themselves toward the next goal. This is done through consistent methodology and practice scheduling, as well as periodic reviews of the students past progress up to date. Often times, the student will not even realize they have crossed a hurdle as it is easy to start looking further down the road as the students abilities start to become second nature. Read More

Instruments: Piano Drums

My teaching method is relatively simple, but is somewhat backwards from how most people teach music. I start with teaching the student a song, at his/her level, by listening to the record and by my example. After that I like to go back and give written out exercises and notes on what we did in the song. Often times a student will get a technical exercises and begin to get frustrated with it because they can't see why they're learning it. Read More

Evan has also done session work as a drummer-for-hire with independent rock bands, most recently on Sub:Om’s Back to the Source. When Evan's not drumming, he's composing. He's created music and mixed sound for independent film and new media, and recently won a Best Sound Design award for his work on indie feature The Good Hearts Club. Evan's style is heavily influenced by classic jazz and funk records, the ‘90s music that sampled them, and a lifelong obsession with Mozart. Read More
