For beginning and intermediate students, I offer my own rudiment book to start learning on a practice pad or snare drum. For learning drum set, I use a variety of books and resources. I will meet and discuss these options with each student to find the right book for them. For more advanced students, I have them transcribe entire songs from bands they enjoy. As technology and the nature of music is always changing and evolving, a large part of my teaching involves work with a metronome, the encouragement of playing along with recordings(even for orchestral excerpts), and transcription. I strongly encourage drum set students to find songs they like to learn by ear as well as learn to notate them. My teaching experience is a little more limited. I haven’t taught for quite a few years and have decided to get back into it with the right student that matches with the experience and talent I bring to the table. I’m not a jazz player, but more of a rock drummer that plays to what the song requires.
