After picking up an old drum set that was sitting by a curb waiting for trash, we began a regular music jam. What an anomaly to have a father and son bonding over music! We still gratefully play together regularly when I visit. I went to College at Madison Media Institute in Madison, WI and graduated with an Associates degree in Audio Engineering. I moved to Austin in 2009 after hearing much about it's thriving music scene. Read More

Nothing is more rewarding than passing the knowledge of music to my students. It truly is an invaluable gift to have the experience and feeling that playing music gives to a person. The student will carry this with them the rest of life and that truly inspires me to push my students to find their own voice on their instrument. Music is a deeply personal experience and to be able to push my students in a direction to focus their creativity on the drum set is my true goal in teaching and I hope to share it with you! I began teaching as soon as I could. My dad held piano lessons out of our house and inspired me to teach guitar (the only instrument my dad wasn't terribly good at). I also taught trumpet, French horn and piano throughout high school. When I got to college, no one at Berklee really needed lessons in instruments anymore, however, I spent a lot of time tutoring kids in Music Theory, Arranging and other more technical aspects of music. I strongly believe that everyone is very different. Learning styles and musical goals are very much a part of this. Some find reading from a book helps them, so for most students I begin by recommending "A Modern Method For Guitar" from the Berklee Press, however for others a book is not as helpful as listening to some music and watching someone play. I like to introduce as much theory as is desired from the student because theory is a very important part of the musical process, but if the student prefers to get playing first and understand the “why” later then we can work something out in that regard. Depending on musical interest, we can work with different genre's and pieces to promote specific techniques and practice routines. Read More

Reading and understanding music notation is obviously essential. However, my priority with first students , is to make sure they are engaged and loving what they are doing within the first 10 minutes. I have sat in front of , and studied with some of the most gifted musicians in the world, so suggesting books and instruction material is easy. What’s important is making sure the student is fully engaged and running to the instrument, rather than feeling like it’s homework. Read More

I like to challenge my students. The trick is to push the student to the edge of the cliff without pushing them off the cliff. Every student is different and requires a different approach to learning music. I can teach students who are visual learners, auditory learners and music theory. There's no one way to teach music and my goal is to teach the student however best they learn. I also like to use videos, pictures and mirrors so the student can see and hear themselves play.
