If I am teaching children, I will mostly focus on fundamentals and developing finger strength or coordination for the instrument. I will try to instill the foundations of music while attempting to make it fun and interesting. If the student is an adult or has more skill level, I will let the student dictate the direction we go in, based on their desired skill level and interest. Having graduated college only less than a year ago, my field teaching experience is minimal, but I did teach/tutor occasionally during my formal education. At Carnegie Hall I worked in part as a bandleader and arranger for my youth ensemble and acquired basic arrangement and collaboration skills. At Berklee I worked briefly as a music theory tutor and helped fellow students more cohesively grasp basic principals of harmony. Also, there is a massive backlash against the pharmaceutical industry for over-prescribing drugs for things like ADHD. Instead, doctors are now recommending music lessons to burn off that excess energy a child may have. Also, a teacher has to be able to have the social skills to 'read' a student. Read More
