My teaching experience has been as eclectic as my musical experiences. Over the past 2 years I have been teaching private lessons at my home studio consistently. Currently I'm looking to expanding my student-base and focus on teaching full time while finishing my final year of graduate studies. The majority of my students have been beginners ages 5-14, although I've been giving informal guitar lessons to peers for the majority of my college and graduate school time. Read More

I am a patient and motivated instructor with an enourmous passion for music. In 2009, I graduated from Berklee College of Music with a Bachelors of Arts in Flute Performance. My performance experience worldwide enriches my musicianship, as well as performing in Harvard University Theather and in the presence of Queen of Jordan Lisa Naheeb. Read More

But more importantly, she can become her own judge of the sounds she makes. She has obtained an increased appreciation of classical music and improved her sensitivity to musical details. My third student had the strongest background, but the weakest connection to music initially. I have helped her listen rather than play. As she gradually develops a sense of good sound, her playing changed dramatically, and her practice management improved. Read More

Each student learns at his or her own pace, and as a result I dislike forcing all students into the same step-by-step regimen. I find that laying out preplanned expectations and milestones at the outset is often more for the teachers benefit than the students. Individualizing lesson plans and progress trajectories is much more work on my end, but I find the result much more rewarding for both instructor and student. Read More

I began teaching as soon as I could. My dad held piano lessons out of our house and inspired me to teach guitar (the only instrument my dad wasn't terribly good at). I also taught trumpet, French horn and piano throughout high school. When I got to college, no one at Berklee really needed lessons in instruments anymore, however, I spent a lot of time tutoring kids in Music Theory, Arranging and other more technical aspects of music. For beginning students I prefer to use either Alfred's, Mel Bay, or Hal Leonard method books. I generally stay away from method books that use guitar tablature because I find that student will prefer to read the tablature instead of standard musical notation. Tablature is a good way to easily show how guitar parts are played, but is not useful when teaching standard notation, music theory, harmony, etc. In addition to using a method book, I will also teach the student popular songs, which is a great way to start teaching chords and song structure in addition to keeping the lesson fun and the student engaged. Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
I have a very musical family on my dad's side! My grandpa played ragtime piano by ear on my mom's side, my grandpa played jazz trumpet on my dad's side, my aunt on my dad's side plays classical piano, both my uncles teach music on my dad's side, and my cousin and her fiance play a variety of instruments on my dad's side. I still question if music is genetic, but this gives me some hope and insight into whether it is or not!
What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
I have played a variety of different styles, ranging from country to jazz fusion, to classical, to swing, to rock, but I will always love playing jazz music the most. I have spent most of my time listening to, practicing, composing, arranging, and just absorbing jazz music. I have been eating, sleeping, and breathing it for a long time. However, if I had to say my true favorite, would be playing the synthesizer in the genre of jazz fusion, as I get to play a lot of notes very fast, and I get to 'shred' a lot of the time in this style. It is also the most fun to play for me :)
If you play more than one instrument, how did you decide to start playing the second? (Or 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc)!
I have played piano all of my life, and I really started to take jazz piano seriously when I was about 11. However, when I have also been singing since I was very young as well, and I got very involved in the musicals in middle school, where I discovered I also had a knack for vocals. From there, I joined my high school's vocal jazz ensemble in my senior year of high school when my opportunities for musicals dwindled, and I continued it through college and I have been pursuing group and solo vocal jazz ever since! It is also very useful to be able to play and sing at the same time as well, and it is a very useful skill that I hope to share with my students!
What does a normal practice session look like for you?
Practice sessions come in all shapes and sizes, and can all depend on what you need to work on. I have had practice sessions range from 20 minutes all the way to 5 hours, because some things take longer to own than others. For example, 2 bars of music can take me 5-10 minutes to practice, or they can take an hour! It all depends on the piece, the difficulty, and even sometimes how I'm feeling that day! Practicing can be a difficult art form, but it's all about falling in love with the process and finding as many ways as possible to enjoy it! I can't lie and say it's always fun, but when I master something, it makes all that time in the shed more worth it than anything else!
What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
I am most proud of winning 3 solo awards and being part of 2 group awards for the Downbeat Student Music Awards. These awards recognize the top jazz musicians in the country ranging from high school to graduate levels of music, and the win a soloist category twice, and being recognized as an outstanding performer prior in the same category is a humbling and profound honor. Nothing makes me more proud to be able to share my music, and to be recognized for it at this capacity is life-changing!
