I focus on nurturing a students natural curiosity, while helping them find the tools to pursue their own musical interests. Many of my younger students prefer to use technology to connect with music (learning how songs are recorded, and the theory behind songwriting), but I also work with more serious students to prepare for college auditions, state/regional jazz band, etc. My methods differ depending on a student's own goals, but they generally all will start with a technical exercise, an exercise designed to get the student thinking critically, and an application of the concepts we're learning. I worked with young kids and helped teach them pop/classic songs. I've had a Diaspora class in college on teaching drumset to beginngers. I began teaching when I was in High School. My first teaching experience was mentoring younger musicians as drum line captain for two years. I lived in Cincinnati Ohio during my summers between semesters at Berklee College of Music. While home, I maintained a busy teaching schedule with beginners all the way up to college students in the Cincinnati area. Navarro is a part of the liberation-oriented free jazz collective, Irreversible Entanglements. After their highly acclaimed self-titled debut album on International Anthem, a second album is due to be released in 2020. Navarro also has a duo project with Brooklyn-based drummer Tcheser Holmes. For my advanced and more focused students I let them set their own goals and then help them in every way I can. I have been teaching for eight years, I have taught privately, in group settings, and with students of all ages. I have found that one of the most important things to have in a student teacher relationship is trust. If a student does not trust his or her teacher than they will be less encouraged to learn and practice. I have also found that building this kind of relationship will also help students to develop a love for music, maybe not in the way that I did, but in a way that is over all beneficial to their character and life philosophy. That is my #1 priority. I emphasize improvisation the most for all my students so they are able to express themselves freely on their instrument! From my experience, most of my students, if not all, practice diligently and consistently because they want to! Not because they are forced to, but because they love to. I explore all types of genre from hip-hop, rock, classical, and jazz in order to expand the student's musical palette. Read More
