For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. My teaching studio is equipped with two drums sets and practice pads to accommodate marching or drum set students.   I also have a full PA and two keyboards set up for piano students and accompanying purposes.  Each student is given an assignment for the week (or specified time) and will then pass off this lesson assignment (barrier) before receiving a new lesson.  Passing off not only includes demonstration of the lesson but also performing with me as I accompany them on the keyboards. My lesson plan includes: Hand and foot technique, learning to read music, good practice techniques and habits, learning to play with a click track/metronome, live performance techniques, rudiments, limb interdependence, Latin, funk, rock, blues, jazz, reggae, and country styles, and charting (mapping out song structures for faster memorization of songs) which also deepens your understanding of the interworking parts of songs and how to arrange them to achieve the most effective response for your listener.
