I am a firm believer in building the curriculum around the student since everyone learns differently and not everyone has the same goals. I start with an assessment to see where their skills are. I do this in 3 major categories: tempo, reading, rudiments. From there I can see what areas need to be focused on first so we can perfect the basics and have a strong foundation to build off of. I believe am gifted at finding a good balance, between discipline and chaos, during my lessons. Just enough regimented order, mixed in with relaxed spontaneity. For my younger students, I am teacher that is demands respect and encourages smiles, at the same time. With my adult students, I hold them accountable, without coming off The Boss! This dichotomy also balances types of curriculum we my cover. There will be some written music, some played by ear. Read More

Each student is unique in the way they learn and progress. I come in to each new lesson trying to learn what works best for each student, as well as what each student is trying to gain from the lessons. For example a very young student may just need exposure to the world of music in a very fun learing atmosphere, while an older or more advanced student may want more a more intense lesson. Read More

I first like to get to know my student's goal whether it's just to learn to play, improve their skills, or become a professional. For a beginner I introduce the instrument, and instruct them in the basic techniques to start playing music the first day! I will then give them the instructional tools so they can feel comfortable putting their ideas into practice. I am very open to the student's musical desires, but I have found that instructional books are a great way to improve one's skills. Read More

With the saxophone as my principal instrument of 35 years now, I also play many other instruments that I teach, including: Piano, Violin, Drums, Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, and Trombone. As for my formal education, I received the Bachelor of Music Education degree from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey; and the Master of Music Education degree from The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA, 2010). For beginning drum set students, the program I recommend is starting with Drum Set Essentials by Peter Erskine. As skills in rudiments and basic patterns develop, I go on to materials such as Syncopation by Ted Reed (reading, coordination, technique), and Stick Control by George Lawrence Stone (technique). For piano, I go over basic theory, major and minor scales, chords and arpeggios and work in Piano For Adults by James Bastien. Read More

My process is based on (but does not adhere strictly to) the Classical approach to Western tonal harmony and asks that the students develop certain fundamentals of technique and theory. In my experience, this structure creates the strongest foundation for pupils to build the rest of their musical lives on, whether professionally or solely for personal enjoyment. All of my students are on the fast track to studying music theory. Read More
