I began my musical training at age 8, began playing professionally as a teenager, and have been teaching for 15 years. I graduated from Northern Kentucky University in 2011 with a Bachelors of Music Education, with a minor in Percussion Performance. I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to perform several nights a week around Austin, and to have toured the US multiple times during the past two years. For beginner and intermediate students: I begin with the end; or rather, an end product. I ask questions like: What sort of music inspires you? What music do you love? What music could you not live without? What music do you aspire to make? Which musicians do you look up to? Depending on the answers, we can figure out a song / artist / style to choose as a goal together. Then I personally learn the chord structure and melody. (In the rare case that they are completely directionless, I'll choose a popular song that they can easily listen to on their own.) My teaching approach generally depends on who the student is, and what that student intends to accomplish. Generally, I am more of a music "coach" who teaches by teaching, and then doing. I typically use a book for the basis of reference, and then encourage the student to go beyond the notes on the page.
