I have written hundreds of pages of exercises from which to pull for virtually every difficulty and style. I have played literally thousands of original and cover songs with many bands. I have always enjoyed teaching others. Even in high school, I consistently helped my peers with their learning and enjoyed helping them learn how to play percussion instruments. After starting college in 2009, I began formally teaching percussion privately and in groups at high schools in my area. I have since expanded to teaching guitar, bass guitar, and composition, incorporating compositional elements into all of my lessons. I've been teaching most of my adult life. I started tutoring while still in high school, and I continued as a teaching assistant as a college student. I taught at Hope College for six years in a number of different subjects: saxophone, jazz ensembles, music theory, aural skills, piano class, and music appreciation. I even ran the percussion ensemble for one semester, which was a blast! I love my AF band job, but I do miss teaching full-time. Read More

As the student progresses they will be able to work on some of their own preferred songs as well. They will learn how to adapt to the needs of the song, and add what might make it better. I stress repetition, so muscle memory and speed are instinctive, and as a drummer consistent practice is imperative. For more advanced students I will assess where they are at, address any holes in learning, and adjust my instructions based on this. Read More
