I am a talented drummer looking to kick-start my career in music instruction. Now that I'm retired I have the time to follow something I've always wanted to do - to give back to the music community my experience as a working musician. I've been teaching most of my adult life. I started tutoring while still in high school, and I continued as a teaching assistant as a college student. I taught at Hope College for six years in a number of different subjects: saxophone, jazz ensembles, music theory, aural skills, piano class, and music appreciation. My style of teaching is personal and caring. Whether my students develop a desire to pursue music beyond our lessons, I care about their happiness and personal success in life. I develop a relationship with my students and I really enjoy it when I hear that they used a concept I taught them in our music lessons for something beyond music. On the first lesson, I seek to establish long-term goals based on the interest and skill level of the player. One of the first questions I ask is, "what song do you want to learn the drum part to?" The most important thing about playing any instrument is to have fun, so I custom-tailor every lesson in order to see the most enjoyment on my students' faces as possible. While I have hundreds of pages of exercises I have written from which to pull, I will usually hold off even opening my book until I feel the student is ready to have fun with it. Read More

Above all, Music should be fun! I love sharing my passion for music with everyone, especially my students. As well as studying what the student is enjoying lately, I would like my students to get a feel for and listen to many different styles of music so they will be able to play almost anything, and hopefully get a wider appreciation and understanding of music in it's many forms.
