As an educator, I believe it is important to continue school music instruction into private flute lessons. I like to communicate with a child's school music teacher in the beginning of flute lessons, so that I can keep music terminology consistent for students, as well as reinforce concepts they're already learning (while expanding musically of course!). I like to have students keep a lesson packet where progress is documented, along with a journal--I find that reflecting for five minutes after a practice session (things that went well, things you need help on, questions), are important tools when striving for success. I began teaching in 2012 when I was awarded the Graduate Assistant position at Western Michigan University. As a G.A., I was responsible for teaching non-music majors saxophone lessons, theory and ear-training, as well as coaching ensembles. I also taught flute and clarinet at Paramount Charter Academy in Kalamazoo, Michigan to middle school students. It was a very rewarding experience to teach people of various ages, ability levels, and goals, and allowed me to refine my teaching methods based on the needs of each student. I currently teach music theory, piano, saxophone, clarinet, flute, drums, and composition at Belle Arti Center for the Performing Arts in Queens, NY. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! It 's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. I prefer one on one lesson time. Parents are welcome to stay and watch if they'd like. I don't have a particular style. While Joey loves to preform, he is passionate about teaching. He has been teaching since 2011. His teaching career began through the non-profit Bravo Waukegan in their Bravo Buddies Summer Camp. He began as the woodwind instructor and through the years worked to become the Artistic Director, managing all aspects of the month long camp. Joey has also served as the Director of Bands for Sistema Ravinia in Lake County and has worked as a teaching artist with the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic and for the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra. With each lesson, as my students improve and become more passionate about their music, I feel a sense of gratitude and reward them always for their accomplishments. So, with each lesson, I set small, steady goals for my student, depending on their level and so forth. Positively acknowledging their successes encourages them to keep moving forward, and makes them more passionate and more well rounded musicians.
