As an educator, I believe it is important to continue school music instruction into private flute lessons. I like to communicate with a child's school music teacher in the beginning of flute lessons, so that I can keep music terminology consistent for students, as well as reinforce concepts they're already learning (while expanding musically of course!). I like to have students keep a lesson packet where progress is documented, along with a journal--I find that reflecting for five minutes after a practice session (things that went well, things you need help on, questions), are important tools when striving for success. While there I taught all music, choral and instrumental from grade one through highschool. I taught all the winds, brass, and strings, choirs, general music, and music theory and appreciation. In 1977 I left teaching in schools and devoted my career to church music. I directed choirs and orchestras in several New York/New Jersey area churches for over 40 years.
