Most beginners benefit from a method book, such as Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, which is a good starting place for most students. As students progress on their instrument, I choose the method books and solos that will best help them develop their talents as well as keep them engaged in the material. I then attended Housatonic College where the Costanzo brothers, Sonny and Sam, headed the music department. Sonny is a renowned trombonist in the New York City area who has played over the years with Clark Terry’s big band and now leads his own.             One of the highlights into my ventures with jazz was to study under John Mehegan, noted scholar, author and educator. I typically begin with an age appropriate method book, supplemented by customized materials I create for each student. The initial focus is on FUNdamentals and understanding basic music theory. As soon as appropriate, I begin to incorporate solo literature selected by the student as well as provide assistance with any school band/orchestra assignments.
