Instruments: Flute

I have taught flute for 4 years to people of all ages -I have taught children, high school students, pre-college division music majors, college students and adult amateurs - students who have played in school and community orchestras, churches and for their own personal enjoyment. While I was attending the Conservatory we were also required to take several "method" classes that involved not only knowing the history of the instrument but the history of teaching the instrument as well as teaching the instrument in front of the Conservatory faculty. Instruments: Saxophone Flute Clarinet

For beginners, I like to start with the Rubank method books, which progress pretty rapidly. I also focus on tone production and scales as we move along at the level of the individual student. I gauge the speed at which we move based on the student in question, and prepare a practice routine for each student based on how much time they have to practice each day. For an intermediate to advanced student, I work with more the more advanced Rubank method books, and suggest solo literature appropriate for them to prepare. Read More

Instruments: Piano Saxophone Flute Clarinet

Clarinet: Any beginning band method book, Baermann, Klose, Voxman. At advanced levels I will use appropriate repertoire and advanced method books tailored to the student. Saxophone/flute: Any beginning band method book or standard beginning to intermediate woodwind book. Appropriate repertoire. Piano: I use most beginning methods, including Alfred, Bastien, Piano Adventures (Faber), and other standard piano methods. I use those appropriate to age, goals, and learning style (for instance, chord methods are sometimes better for adults). Read More

Instruments: Piano Flute Piccolo

I have had a passion for both music and education for as long as I can remember, and private lesson instruction has been the best way for me to put those to use. I have almost 20 years of experience on the flute, including a bachelor's degree in Flute Performance from Olivet Nazarene University and a master's in music theory from the University of North Texas. In that time, I was given many leadership opportunities including flute choir president and marching band head drum major, allowing me to begin to hone my skills as an educator. Read More

When will I start to see results?
I understand your concern and eagerness to see progress in your child's musical journey. The timeline for when you'll start to see results can vary from child to child, as it depends on several factors: 1. Practice Consistency: The most critical factor in achieving progress is regular practice. The more consistently your child practices their instrument, the faster they are likely to improve. Encourage them to practice regularly and establish a practice routine. 2. Age and Development: Younger children may take longer to develop the physical and cognitive skills required for playing an instrument. Be patient, as progress can be slower in the early stages of learning. 3. Musical Background: If your child has prior musical experience, they may progress more quickly. However, if they are starting from scratch, it may take a bit longer to see noticeable results. 4. Instrument Choice: Some instruments are easier to learn initially than others. For example, learning to play the piano may yield more immediate results than learning a complex instrument like the violin. 5. Quality of Instruction: Effective instruction is crucial. A skilled and experienced music instructor can significantly impact your child's progress. Ensure that your child's instructor is providing a structured and personalized learning plan. 6. Goals and Expectations: The timeline for progress also depends on your child's goals. If they aim to play simple songs, you may see results sooner than if they aspire to perform more complex pieces. 7. Supportive Environment: Creating a positive and encouraging environment at home can motivate your child to practice and progress faster. It's important to remember that learning an instrument is a journey, not a race. Progress can be gradual, and it's essential to celebrate small achievements along the way. Consistent effort, patience, and a supportive approach will ultimately lead to the results you're hoping to see. Keep open communication with your child's music instructor to track their progress and adjust the learning plan as needed.

Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
Yes, I did have a teacher who inspired me to pursue a career in music. My music teacher in elementary school was a truly remarkable individual. They not only taught me the technical aspects of playing an instrument but also instilled a deep love and appreciation for music as a whole. What made this teacher so inspiring was their passion for music and their ability to convey that passion to their students. They made learning fun and engaging by introducing me to a wide range of musical styles and genres. Whether it was classical, jazz, or contemporary music, they showed me the beauty in each one and encouraged me to explore my own musical interests. Moreover, my teacher was incredibly patient and supportive. They recognized my strengths and weaknesses and tailored their teaching approach to suit my needs. This personalized attention made me feel valued as a student and motivated me to work hard and improve. But perhaps the most important thing my teacher did was to lead by example. They were a talented musician themselves and would often perform for the class. Seeing their dedication and skill firsthand was truly inspiring and made me want to strive for excellence in my own musical journey. So, in summary, my music teacher inspired me by fostering a love for music, being a patient and supportive mentor, and setting a positive example through their own passion and skill. Their influence played a significant role in shaping my path in the world of music, and I hope to pass on the same inspiration and love for music to my students, just as they did for me.
