For over 6 years now, I have been teaching flute within different contexts. Some of the most meaningful teaching experiences I have had have taught me about the unique relationship we each have with the art of music. Private lessons have provided an outlet to encourage and guide individuals based on their needs; educational outreach concerts have given me the opportunity to address easy and complex subjects according to the audience in front of me; masterclasses have given me the opportunity to help individuals gain a strong sense of confidence from a foundation of understanding while nurturing the audience's curiosity regarding music; and working as a Teaching Artist with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra has brought all these elements of teaching and learning to a brand new level that has only strengthened my foundation as a teacher. I began teaching part time when I was in college. After moving to Dallas, I continued to teach part time while attending graduate school. Upon graduation, I began teaching full time during the day at public schools and evenings in my own studio. Encouraging reguler practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for my students. This tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the flute. As a product of "the system", I generally teach "the system". By that I mean that in the education system here in Texas has been teaching this same way for years and years. After a year or two learning the fundamentals, scales and phrasing, then one gets to study the Ferling etudes for region band and a few basic solos for solo and ensemble.
