When I attended Rhode Island School of Design, I performed flute and piccolo in the Brown University Orchestra and also studied flute at Boston University. Throughout the years, I have taken Master classes with Orchestral Flutists such as Julius Baker of the New York Philharmonic and Jeannie Baxtresser in Tanglewood, Mass. Even though my Major was Art and I made a living as an art teacher in the public school system, my love for flute and music was always present as I would often incorporate music and flute playing into my art lessons. For beginner students we start by grasping the concept that make up music in a practical way. The specific bibliography changes from student to student and form instrument to instrument. In the path of becoming better there's is a lot of resources out there that range from composition to specific theory books. Its just a matter of a personalized attention to the specific needs of the student. I am big into Open Source and No-Copyright material that can be used. Read More

When I first meet a student, I like evaluate their current skill level and based on that, I will have an idea of which direction to guide them. I will learn their intentions of what their goals are short term and long term so we can work together to prepare for what is to come. We will study fundamentals, solo repitore, scales, basic theory and contemporary technique. I will also work with helping the student to choose an upgrade flute if they feel they are ready. Read More

For beginner children, I like to use the Suzuki Method. For adults and intermediate to advanced children, I use a combination of books from different authors e.g. Taffanel Gaubert Flute Method, Marcel Moyse books, for technique development and also many pieces from the classical repertory. I also let the students choose pieces of any style that theyre interested in playing and they can handle. I have developed effective teaching techniques, which allows me to foster a fun and engaging learning environment. Read More

When first introduced to a new student, I typically have them play for me to assess their abilities on the instrument as well as their knowledge of general music theory. Once that is done, I am then able to recommend the appropriate materials that work best for the student. For students at any level, I try to see what they are interested in musically and fit time in their development to work on the things that get them excited about music and also help them progress on their instrument. I really take a look at what the student needs to learn and what the student wants to learn because I've seen a lot of students giving up because the institution or teacher is giving to much theory and very poor practice. I try to balance those responsibilities to a point that the student will always be learning something new as long as I work on their motivation and consistency of keeping up so they can learn how to play anything they like and want.
