Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for the fine arts! Therefore, it’s important that each student progresses at his or her own pace, I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a student’s desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. A method I use to encourage my student’s progress is to give them stars for when they work on their assignment; the stars they earn will allow the student to choose a song of their choice that is not from the same genre being studied—this may be a pop song. I never assume a student cannot succeed. Progress comes quickly with a variety of songs supported by successive exercises and methodology. Parental involvement is highly recommended and I try to work with parents to determine motivational techniques. I have found that students need a regular practice time 4 to 5 times a week, even if it is only a few minutes at a time; but, hopefully, we can find music that they like to sit down and play. Everyone has the capacity to be a musician...therefore, I teach students of all ages and include all cultures (all styles and musical genres). No one is a 'beginner' when it comes to recognizing great music, so I strive to create musicians who can reach their own goals...thus, building independence is the key: My job is done when my students can do what I do without needing me! For more experienced students, I assess your present skills upon our first lesson via a variety of repertoire so as to 'diagnose' what areas you need improvement on musically speaking. Read More

Each student is unique so I start out with seeing where they are and we go from there. If I have a student that is needing more help than usual I will help the student understand things in a way that is helpful for them. Students that have more experience, I use some of the method books that most school use such as Essential Elements for Band, Rubank method books, as well as new material customized for students. I like to use a fundamental approach so the student can read and play written music as well as learn to play by ear so they might actually get out of the classroom and into a band. Read More

My name is Jessica. I have been playing flute for 23 yrs and enjoy teaching beginner flute 6-8th grade and volunteer flute lessons for a local middle schools. I have been playing piccolo since freshman year of college. I work from home for apple and practice my flute about 10+ hours a week. When I start with a beginning student, I always ask the student to bring any music they are current learning, want to learn and a challenge piece to look forward to that way we are able to build a road map of the students learning and what skills we need to achieve to learn that acquired piece.
