For my beginning students, I generally start with the book their school teacher wants them to use, or I have students use the Yamaha book 1. If the student begins in middle school or high school, I like to use the Rubank books. I believe that working on solo repertoire is an important part of learning and performing, so I begin my students on solo repertoire as soon as possible. I choose solo works that are in the ability of the student, yet offer enough of a challenge to help the student learn and grow. Read More

No matter the age level or experience of the student, I will first gauge the student's ability and current level. Then I will choose from appropriate method books depending on the student's skill level. If a student has a specific path that they want to take or have their own books they want to learn from, I will cater the lessons to that. For elementary students and some middle schoolers, I usually either work out of Standard of Excellence or Essential Elements book 1 to begin their studies or continue where they left off. For high schoolers and more advanced middle schoolers, I like to have them play solo flute pieces that fit with their ability level. If the student is in band at school, I also work through that music with them if they are interested. Read More
