Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music. It is so important that each individual student progresses at his or her own ace. I encourage this progress by setting realistic and clear goals for my students at each lesson. When I acknowledge their accomplishments, it helps to fuel the desire to learn of the student and makes them eager to learn more. Once I find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction towards the wants and needs of my students. Read More

My teaching experience started at age 12 with Alesia Byrd Johnson. I worked with toddlers and as they aged I would continue in their classes while adding the next group of children. Since then I have taught private lessons in homes, studios, private schools, and after graduating from Michigan State University- I taught public school orchestra, band, and choir from Prek-12 in Michigan and then Georgia. I also was in charge of helping students with their Individualized Education Plans, IEP's, in Georgia. Read More

For beginning students I like to start with the Standard of Excellence book 1. Getting through that book we would advance to Rubanks Advanced Method Vol. 1 book. Perfecting the sound and tone is key to making a piece of music sound good followed by inputting expression and giving it color to a piece making it have more characteristic than just a piece of music. I try to keep it fun and exciting to keep the interest in learn stay captivated no matter their ability level. Read More

My passion for sharing knowledge begin during my time as high school tuba section leader, which led to Senior band president. Assisting my peers so we could sound better via musical corrections, this would build our confidence levels and the moral throughout the ensemble. I furthered my passion for music at Berklee College of Music, where I studied various aspects, methods, and approaches to educating someone about the art of music. Read More

Lessons will feature a warm-up period, followed by review of material from previous lessons, playing of new material, and wrap-up with sightreading and assignments for next lesson. Students are often encouraged to self-evaluate and set their own level of rigor. I believe in a collaborative approach that involves questioning students and having students ask questions of themselves. More than having students be able to perform technically, I want students to have an understanding of music and their instrument intimately, from their own awareness, rather than rote explanation or practice.
