My methods vary depending on skill level, but with every student I begin by examining their understanding of theory as I believe theory is the basis of all music. I then like to get an understanding of what their main goals are, whether that be learning to play music for friends and family all the way up to making a career out of it. My experience in audio engineering, management, and producing also allows me to help students plan for a solid future career in whatever field suits them. Read More

The combination of these practices keep the lessons student-centered, but also ensure that the learning objectives are accomplished. I approach teaching very seriously with a lot of planning, but during the lesson, I have lots of fun getting to talk to my students! During lessons, I strive to get to know my student better to build a positive relationship so that both of us truly enjoy our time together. I also take time to help students set weekly practice goals in order to progress at the student's pace. Read More

For piano students, I prefer Alfred's methods, whether the adult or for beginners. For band and orchestra, I use Essential Elements (or whatever their school is using), and supplement with Rubank's methods. For voice, I concentrate on whatever the student is interested in, with a foundation of good technique and understanding of the voice range and how to control it, with some solfege and sight-singing mixed in. Whatever the instrument, I follow and listen to the student to understand what they need, and change my curriculum to suit them. Read More

My number one rule for teaching is patience and setting small goals each week. Every student should want to pick up the instrument days after the lesson. Seeing someone learn a song and playing it through correctly is a mini miracle. Progress through repetition and different exercises has been a high yield of success in my personal experiences. Praise for when a student fulfills a goal goes a far way in future lessons. Read More

Since graduating from Bethany College in 2010, I taught at a music studio in Wheeling, WV. Unfortunately, the studio closed down. Along with teaching there, I was giving private lessons from home and continue to do so. Teaching is something that gives me the opportunity to pass on what I've learned so far and also to instill students with the opportunity to continue a journey of lifelong learning with music. I've had so many great experiences with music and teaching also allows me to help students create their own experiences with music that could impact their life in a positive way. Read More

A strong drive to improve can come from competition, playing with friends, and above all else, practicing! I believe that competition is a strong drive to push students forward in whatever they are passionate about, and preforming with others is a great way to improve as well. I incorporate many of the practices that I learned from my instructors in college in my teachings, while some are easy to pick at others are more advanced, allowing myself as a teacher to push my students further early on and giving them a advantage for later on! I meet with students for an introductory lesson. We discuss their goals. I suggest method books, online learning tools, and other strategies that they can use while they study and practice. During lessons, we review songs, techniques, theory, and other concepts that they are studying and need to improve on. In my experience, by providing a custom lesson plan, students can improve in the areas that they want to learn. Read More
