Though I have taught on and off for the last fifteen years, my most formative experience as a teacher was my time teaching at School of Rock in 2015. I taught bass, guitar, keyboards, vocals, and ensemble musicianship to students ranging in age from 6 to 60. I enjoyed using the music they loved in order to teach the fundamentals of music, just as I learned the fundamentals from the music I love. Read More

The basis of my teaching style is transparency. My aim is to be as clear as possible about what I expect from my students, and how they can improve. I believe great technique is the proper foundation for any musician, and I will always give the students exercises along with songs that will help my students to develop proper technique. Most of all, I try to make sure that my students have fun. Music is supposed to be fun, so maintaining a sense of humor is a good thing in my opinion. Read More

Notebooks! I'm a big believer in writing things down so before your lesson, don't only bring your guitar but also a notebook to write down what we learned, and what you should practice before our next lesson. It is vital that students have a physical reminder of our lessons and the techniques we covered, because in my experience, I've found this really helps with not only learning but retaining the information we go over. The great thing about private one-on-one lessons is the individualized pace and learning style. I like to understand the most effective ways my student learns. Some students need to be immersing themselves in exercises that allow them to create and experience the music through a personal lens. Some students prefer to hone in on the technical work and theory. Both are important skills for a well-rounded player but depending on the student's personality they may be more inclined toward one or the other. Read More
