I began teaching private lessons during my time at Converse College, over 10 years ago. I taught at the Lawson Academy of the Arts in Spartanburg, SC from 2014-2016, and privately out of my home for the past 7 years. I have also led numerous college and high school level violin sectional rehearsals, including violin sectionals for the Senior High School Orchestra at UNCG Summer Music Camp in 2019, where I was a counselor and rehearsal assistant, the UNCG Symphony Orchestra, and the Converse Symphony Orchestra, and working as a regular sectional coach with the Triangle Youth Symphony. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Guitar For Kids. For teenage and adult students I use Hal Leonard's Guitar Method Complete Edition. For classical guitar students I use Aaron Shearer's Learning the Classic Guitar Volume 2. After a student has a grasp over basic technique, chords, and reading I like to split the lesson between book work (note reading) and teaching students to play songs that they enjoy. Read More

As mentioned above, I first began teaching guitar and piano during my college years. Also, I have taught music and English as a Second Language in North Carolina Public Schools, and guitar classes in community colleges. My instruction has included beginning to advanced elements of playing the guitar and music theory as it relates to the study of guitar. Additional areas of study included: different genres of music; playing rhythms of different song styles; understanding chord diagrams & reading tablature; and developing improvisation skills by learning how chords fit in a musical key, and relative scales. My choices in books and other resources for the student are based primarily on the students' individual goals, needs, and interests. Generally, I approach the subject matter with firm but relaxed expectations, giving the students freedom but also requiring them to pursue a specified goal. This may include allowing the student to take a break from a challenging piece if necessary, to let their mind calm down and refocus while they practice a different piece with different requirements. Music has held a major position in my life since I was very young. I began composing music before I was in school. I began taking piano lessons when I was four years old.
