There are little bit differences between Korea and the U.S.A about teaching idea. I have lots of advantages from it because I can combine each of them very well. I also encourage my students to take opportunities, for example, joining in Youth Orchestra, Ensemble, Competitions not only giving private lessons. Since I want my students to have more joy, confidence, and advanced experiences from music. Most of my students are member in Orchestra ( Metropolitan New York Youth Orchestra, Carnegie Hall Youth Orchestra, Philadelphia Youth Orchestra). Read More

I first began teaching while still completing my Bachelors degree at William Paterson in 2011. Most of my students were beginning level piano students, but I had a few more advanced students as well as some people studying saxophone with me. My teaching philosophy is to combine teaching the technique of an instrument with learning songs as well as theory and improvisation/composition. Everyone learns technique, but learning music that I wanted to learn, learning how those songs were written (theory), and eventually elaborating on those songs (improvisation), and writing my own music (composition), was what really got me deeply engaged in the act of practicing and making music, and I have found over several years of teaching that it keeps my students engaged and enjoying the learning process. I believe that learning is both an internal and communal process. Every living being has the potential to learn to do amazing things or acquire incredible skills. However, to learn something means to make it apart of oneself. In the case of music, many a jazz musician spends years trying to memorize a plethora of songs. The irony is that without having someone to play with and truly experience the music making process, the musician will never internalize what he or she is learning. Read More

I feel like I have a very loose teaching style that is grounded in the fundamentals. I do not put deadlines or timelines on any student's progress, and I also realize that each student's needs are unique to each and every person. I work to give each and every student a very solid understanding of music (being able to sit at a piano or pick up a horn and play music, be able to recognize and understand the theoretical aspects of music, aurally discern chord progression and when a wrong not is played to understand why chords move they way they do and be able to easily hear your own musitakes). My teaching style is adaptive to the students goals! I am a fairly easy going teacher that will help meet students where they are at, and walk with them on their growth journey. We will progress at the student's personal pace. My style can range from working casually on a new song each week, trying to perfect that concerto you have been working on, helping pre-professionals get to the musical level they need to achieve to become a professional themselves, or somewhere in the middle! I am adaptable to what interests and clicks with you as a musician, so if you want to dive deep into music theory, including music notation, harmony, advanced rhythms, awesome. If you would rather learn by ear and reading basic chord charts and lead sheets, no problem. Regardless, I like to start with establishing good form and a basic understanding of musical terms. From there, well look at the music that inspires you and craft a strategy to increase your comfort and proficiency in that area. Read More
