When I give students pieces, exercises, and examples to improve their skills, it is crucial that they not only enjoy what theyre playing but are able to apply it to other areas in their musical vocabulary. From my experience, I have noticed this excites the students the most because they are able to grasp the information in terms of how to play as opposed to what to play. When a student feels accomplished, they are more likely to practice and have the mindset of practicing to be more of a personal decision rather than a requirement. Read More

Beyond this I covet opportunities to show all students that through the development they experience in studying music, they become citizens who are better equipped to contribute to their communities. The opportunities for music students to realize the value of listening, and the value in applying ones attention to extended ideas, are among a music instructors greatest responsibilities. I believe that their involvement in music or another art form equip them with invaluable tools that will help them throughout their lives in both career and personal settings. Read More

My favorite way to learn is my working towards a song that I love. I always ask my students what specific song they want to play, and then structure my lessons around the building blocks of that song: chords, rhythm, melody, etc. I understand that a lot of guitarists do not care much for the nitty gritty of music theory (especially for rock and such), and while I am admittedly a huge theory nerd I am willing to overlook theory for a more feel-based approach. I generally ask what your musical interests are and then I find a method specific for each person. I work on identifying chords, improvisation, playing melodies and song writing as well. I am a fan of William levitts books or jazz guitar which is a method I learned at berklee and is a very useful book for picking teqnique in a fun way , exploring some classical etudes for electrical guitar and i find this to be a great tool for developing speed, ear training and identifying chords with different sonorities to them. I began taking on some of my own private students around 3 years ago, and quickly fell in love with the idea of giving back to others what I have learned over my years of performing. Introducing students to the basics of guitar and their significance, as well as motivating and informing students of the importance of practice and persistence are some of the key elements I like to emphasize when teaching - especially with younger students. I have an open approach to teaching guitar, and encourage students to utilize knowledge obtained through my lessons in whatever context they prefer as opposed to gearing them towards a certain style of playing. Much of my own teaching was based in jazz, but I have managed to find myself utilizing much of what I was taught playing in a heavy, shoegazey rock band. The preferences of my students are important to me, and while setting goals for progress is important, it is important to me that students learn at their own pace and move forward on their own initiative.
