For beginner and intermediate students: I begin with the end; or rather, an end product. I ask questions like: What sort of music inspires you? What music do you love? What music could you not live without? What music do you aspire to make? Which musicians do you look up to? Depending on the answers, we can figure out a song / artist / style to choose as a goal together. Then I personally learn the chord structure and melody. (In the rare case that they are completely directionless, I'll choose a popular song that they can easily listen to on their own.) From there, I start teaching the fundamental techniques of the instrument, and continually refer back to our song, for why the technique is important. Read More

I believe listening is the key to learning. I listen to my students to discover what techniques are working best for them and which are their weakest then adapt my lessons to their needs. I also try to teach students how to listen to music, hear the empty spaces in songs that really give them their polish, and how to listen for other individual instruments to understand whem to accompany instruments and when to give them their own space. This is a great way to keep students interested and inspire them to continue with his or her lessons For advanced students, who can really be of any age, I will work with them to move beyond learning basic parts and fundamentals. I will work with the student to introduce advanced techniques as well as in depth analysis of theory. This is essential so that the student can move beyond just learning parts of song, to becoming intuitive and finding his or her own voice with the instrument. Read More

I'm a passionate artist who took the leap from a financial career to creative education! I graduated UT with a degree in mathematics and started working as a retirement consultant. The three years of my financial career was new and intimidating, but my love for art and music was always comfortable and freeing. I chose to leave a lucrative career once I found that building a relationship with students and sharing my knowledge was not only more rewarding, but fun and exciting as well. Read More

As we advance into soloing, we'll add more information around fretboard knowledge and visualization techniques. I will always explain "why" we are learning something, whether it's a particular technique or topic and "how" we go about accomplishing it. For Intermediate level students, I'll take music theory a little deeper and we'll gain an understanding of different styles and progressions such as the 12-bar (Blues), 1-4-5 (Rock/Pop) and 2-5-1 (Jazz) progressions in popular music along with soloing techniques. Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
