Teaching is a journey of discovery, growth, and mutual inspiration. My approach is centered on creating an environment where learning becomes an exciting exploration rather than a mere instruction. I view myself as a guide, nurturing the innate curiosity and talents of my students while providing them with the tools and knowledge they need to flourish in their musical pursuits. My teaching approach is characterized by fostering a personalized connection with each student, nurturing their passion for music, and building a strong foundational understanding. Read More

After I first received my Bachelor's Degree from CSU Fullerton, I opted to showcase my original music through distinct outlets. One of the resulting projects, themattsmithneujazztrio, has recorded three full-length records; my other project, JUICEBOX, has recorded two. I gained a masters of music in jazz drum set from California Institute of the Arts, where I was honored to record my own composition for the CalArts, 30th Annual Jazz CD at Capitol Records. Setting realistic goals is definitely a good place to start. Also, I encourage transcribing music in small sections, and to always start slow and take deep breaths, as this will reduce the student's normal anxiety and has done wonders in my own playing as well. Using a rhythm reference like a metronome or a drum loop while practicing is also a must, at it helps develop the student's groove. Internalizing music by developing the student's ear is also a very important part of my teaching style as Is applicable in any genre (hear it before you play it!) Read More

I first like to learn a bit about each student and what their goals are on the instrument. Knowing whether or not someone as musical career goals vs. just being able to have fun playing is important! For beginners I general start with a bit of the basics - how the guitar works and how to start fretting notes and making some noise, and then begin moving towards easier or simplified versions of popular songs. I am a kind yet honest person. Therefore, I won't shy away from criticism, but will always do so in a respectful and proactive manner. Every student is different and I believe it is my job to adapt to fit their needs. It is wonderful to see students excited and prideful of seeing results from hard work. First and foremost, it is my job to provide a positive atmosphere a student feels comfortable in. Read More

For as long as I can remember, music his been my passion. I began playing drums when I was six years old, and began performing around my hometown of Denver in rock bands at 13. Along the way, I also picked up guitar, allowing me to explore harmonic and melodic aspects of music that drumming didn't provide. In high school, I joined the drumline, where I worked intensely on my technique and speed, while simultaneously playing original music in bands around town. Read More

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
