I always ask my students what specific song they want to play, and then structure my lessons around the building blocks of that song: chords, rhythm, melody, etc. I understand that a lot of guitarists do not care much for the nitty gritty of music theory (especially for rock and such), and while I am admittedly a huge theory nerd I am willing to overlook theory for a more feel-based approach. Guitar has a bit of a steep learning curve at first, so I work on the basics of forming a good sound and producing clean notes and chords. Once that's established, I try to inspire students by showing just how much music can be made with as little as three chords. I'll help students learn their favorite songs and use those as an avenue for learning more technique.
