In guitar lessons with me, I generally go through a guitar book (the book varies depending on the students experience and what we decide to use) but mainly focus on what the student wants to learn. Learning the fundamentals of guitar will help the student learns what they want to learn, so that is applied to the lessons. Advanced students help develop their own curriculum. ChildrenThe guitar is a great friend as it always gives back to us whatever we give to it. It is never unfair. The more we practice, the better we sound. We all need a friend like that at times (regardless of our age). Is the student excited or overwhelmed? Bored or just tired? No single approach works with every student when teaching drums. There are simply too many styles and methods to choose from. But when working with beginners, I tend to focus mostly on developing a good internal sense of rhythm and good listening skills. Then if the student wishes, we may specialize in classical, jazz, rock, latin, or whatever style the student is interested in.
