At the end of each year, there will be a final studio recital where each student will get to perform a piece they have worked on during the year to ensure they get a chance to have formal performance experience. My teaching style is very transparent; I want my students to recognize what we are working towards and how close they realistically are to that goal. This way, the student and I are working together to achieve a greater understanding of their instrument! I love feeling like I'm helping a student gain an understanding of a topic, rather than simply dictating a list of rules to know. I myself have an appreciation for many different styles of music, so I do my best to help students understand stylistically what is appropriate, necessary, and customary about the repertoire they are performing. Students are encouraged to say the play of each voice independently to foster coordination independence as conscious control. My Seven Shapes system provides foundation for the commonalities and distinctions across whatever course of songs they study. For more intermediate students, we take on more challenging songs, exercise greater stick control w/ compound rudiments, and chart entire drum parts of whole songs. Intermediate and Advanced students focus on the specific motifs and skills of more distinct and challenging drumming; speed/endurance for punk/metal, groove and phrasing for hip-hop and pop 4-way independence for latin and afro-cuban, shuffle feel open/improvisational song-form for blues and jazz, Advanced students also learn odd-meter, poly-meter, polyrhythms and ostinato from both traditional African/Indian musics and contemporary progressive examples. Jacob R. is a guitarist from Bushkill Pennsylvania. An alumnus from the Tell School of Music in Millersville, he has worked in the music scene in the Lancaster area as an event coordinator and an assistant studio engineer. He's been playing guitar for 10 years playing musicals in Lancaster, Ephrata, and commercial band ensembles at the Tell School of Music. I encourage people to do their best as well as go at their own pace. I set goals, If they exceed those goals in a week or 2 months, It doesn't matter, as long as they are trying their best. I make up games for the little ones, such as, having them to do online games involving music. For older students I try to still involve fun activities such as teaching them their favorite songs.
