As a child, I participated in choir for 8 years and was in the University of Michigan's University Choir and Orpheus Singers. While fairly new to teaching private lessons, I have taught musicians I have played with and other family members, friends, and others. I have encouraged everyone I have taught practical uses of the instrument that relates the music theory found in specific genres to more comprehensible techniques to use on the guitar. Typically, for students just starting out we would start on standard snare method, working out rudiments and gaining a sense of feel for drumming. This would eventually build up to working with the entire drum set, where we would explore several styles including Rock, Pop, Jazz, Swing, Latin and everything in between. I have years of experience performing and teaching both classical and jazz styles, and try to make lessons fun for my students. Having studied some of the most renowned saxophonists in their field, including Timothy McAllister and Eugene Rousseau, I am comfortable teaching saxophonists of all levels. As a performer I have won or placed in numerous competitions through the country, performed a concerto with a professional orchestra for an audience of 3,000, and have have played hundreds of jazz gigs. For very young beginning students, I typically start with Faber Piano Adventures, and for older beginners, the Faber Accelerated Piano Adventures or Hal Leonard Adult Learner Series. Once the student has shown an understanding of basic theory and technique, classical repertoire will be introduced, along with level appropriate arrangements of the student's choice music. It's important that the student is taught how to practice a piece effectively to continue growing musically in between lessons, so that lessons can be used to find areas for improvement, and to learn new concepts and material. For beginning students (adult and children) I like to be sure that their knowledge about fundamentals is solid. I believe ear training is paramount. Not everyone can sing, but secure pitch discrimination can help all musicians (even percussionists). I encourage all students to participate in ensembles (band, choral also). Knowledge of phrasing is also important to aspiring musicians. Students need support from listening to others play (live performances, radio,and recordings). Read More

I start beginners off with Frances Clark, The Music Tree Series. I also use the Faber-Faber Piano Adventures and Helen Marlais' Succeeding at the Piano. As students progress, I focus on repertoire pieces issuing from the baroque, classical, romantic, and modern eras as to introduce students to the history of music. Important components of home-practice include sight-reading and technique-building exercises. I also encourage sight-singing as a way of developing the student's ear. Read More
