Depending on the age and personality, I cater each lesson to the individual. If they are younger students, I'll use Mel Bay or Hal Leonard books, but sometimes I will make a custom book that builds with their development and learning style. I believe reading sheet music is important, but understand that being able to play along with other musicians using ear training and improv skills, as well as reading chord charts, is just as necessary. My teaching style is very laid back and encouraging. I love seeing a student pick up a new instrument but I usually sense a lot of nerves and bad self talk. I believe when learning anything, one should be comfortable to fail and ask questions. I try to make sure this is understood right away. I have a basic structure at the beginning of my lessons that includes scales and chords, but I like to use the rest of the sessions to work on what the student has been inspired by. Read More

At all ages, my lessons begin with a composition and theory-based approach. We spend time talking about music, form, and function to gain a greater understanding of the art. Musical concepts are often-repeated, so what is learned once can be applied again and again, and I use this to establish and build upon a solid foundation so that we can make reasonable strides toward the student's goals. In addition, my lessons are goal-focused, and I make sure that everything we learn builds toward a single goal. Read More

On the first lesson you will set short and long term goals you would like to achieve on your playing, and I will then design a lesson plan to achieve those goals. From there on each lesson will be a fun and challenging workshop in which I will help you gain technique and musicality in your favorite music styles, always working toward your goals. Each lesson generally starts off with some assigned work from the previous lesson and then we move on to technique/reading skills exercises. Read More

Music is one of the most important things in my life and am overjoyed when given the opportunity to teach and instill that into another student. I work with student's at their pace, with the thought in mind that my student is continuously practicing every week to improve and utilize past lessons. However, I do keep in mind a sense of reality with one's schedule, how busy they may be and the inability to sometimes make time to practice. Read More

For piano: I usually start with Piano Safari method books, which I supplement with pieces that pique the student's interest. I love this series for young students because it combines rote with note-learning. In this method, the student immediately is playing all over the keyboard and has fun learning. I have a large library of music books, from which I can select pieces that fit the needs of the student. Read More
