Much of my lesson plan is specific to the age, experience, desire and ability of the student, but the basics tend to remain the same. I try to craft dexterity and melodic exercises to unite the ear and fingers, while crating a basic understanding of the theory involved, a rhythmic exercise which teaches comping and time, and assign a song to work on between lessons. I refer to this plan as "Theory, Time Tune." This technique was effective when assigned to me and I still use it to guide my own practice. Read More

Speaking from experience, a student learns best at their own pace. With private music lessons, it is a lot easier to identify what skills a student is good and as well as what needs to be worked on. When working with a new student, I like to hear what they have, so that way I can determine what I need to work on with said student. Because in order for a teacher to be as effective as can be for the student, they must get to know the student as a player and see what they already know so that the student is properly challenged and not bored or frustrated. My methods... are really more of "what kind of person" is the student. Usually we start with the sitting position on the instrument, stick control , snare exercises , basic drum beats, development. After the control of the instrument the most important is the sound control...dynamics, exercises into the beats, songs, playing in more music styles, independence. ....success. Read More

Mel Bay's first 2 bass books were my first but there are many to choose from. Starting slow is imperative for the beginner. This prevents injury because bass is a physically demanding instrument at times. I teach warm ups, breathing, posture, hand and arm positions, stretches, and cool downs. Practicing with a metronome must be a daily routine for the evolving bassist because they are the beat no matter what style. Read More
