I like to create lesson plans around what kind of music the student wants to learn. For example, most young girls want to learn Disney princess songs. So I print them off their own copies of the songs that they had expressed an interest in learning. I feel like if the student is not interested in playing or singing the music that I am giving them it could be the best curriculum in the world, but it won't help them learn if they are not actively engaged in the music they are singing or playing. For beginners students I typically start with music exploration, with percussion instruments or even turning or our bodies into a musical instrument, then once they have decide the instrument they want to learn, we begin with muscle memory and easy basic repertoire, for students that have been already initiated, I find out what kind of music there interested about and provide some of the basic skills to perform the piece they are interested in and slowly but surely introduced the basic skill to properly perform the piece. My teaching experience sates back to running trumpet sectionals (in Junior High High School) for an All Star Jazz Band in my home town. When I was 16 I started teaching younger trumpet students as well. I descovered early on that I had a passion for directing and teaching. This stayed with me, and I always have incorporated education into my directing and leadership styles as a perormer. As a Musical Director for Royal Caribbean I would regularly have to teach an hour long show to my international band in under an hour and a half.I know that learning an instrument is hard work and that motivation is key to success.
