I have been teaching in some capacity since college. I have directed a high-school praise team and taught guitar, piano, and recorder in a corrections institute. One of my earliest students was a former band-mate. One of the early lessons is the importance of practice. He saw for the first time my work ethic and commitment to daily practice. If they have had training with another method, I work to blend that method with the Alfred's method during the first month or two of lessons. Once the student has learned the fundamentals, I introduce them to the solo repertoire appropriate for their level and their genre of greatest interest to them. For beginner piano students, I have two methods books that I use. For young children, I use the Bastion Piano Basics series. It is colorful, fun, and exciting for young learners. It is also very informative, so parents can help their young ones practice if they need the help! For beginning adult students, I use the Faber Adult Piano Adventures series, as this is more tailored to older students.
