I usually start with the Rubank Elementary Method book. There are four books in the series and they are very comprehensive. Once the student progresses to the Intermediate book, I also add Selected Duets Volume 1. I have found that playing duets strengthens listening skills and intonation, plus they are fun! Solo and ensemble pieces are introduced as the student becomes more proficient and various performing opportunities begin to present themselves. Read More

My teaching experience goes all the way back to 2003, when I was a percussion section leader in junior high school. I was a section leader throughout high school and on into my undergraduate degree in percussion. This involved both teaching groups of my peers but also giving individual attention to anyone who needed the extra help. From 2008-2012, during my undergraduate degree, I also began officially teaching private lessons through the University of Indianapolis' Community Music Center. Read More

I believe the most rewarding thing about being a teacher is seeing a student come into their lessons excited and passionate about their playing. One of the things I find encourages students to practice is to give them mini rewards when they successfully play a piece or etude, such as stickers or stamps. My first teacher did this for me and it was always very exciting to pick out which sticker I wanted in my music. Read More

If authentic, life-long learning is to occur, and the student seeks to develop respect for the teacher-student dynamic, the craft, and their relation to the musical world around them, the choice whether to accept the invitation must always remain theirs. I will continue on my adventure fueled by love and imagination, determined to make that invitation to relationship as significant, enthralling, and heart-felt as possible. When a student is compelled to RSVP with a yes, no larger inspiration could resound. Read More

For all of my beginning students I use the Suzuki method. I am a very fast paced teacher, and I hold all of my students to high standards. As my students get into more advanced music, I select solo literature that best fits their musical abilities. For my vocal students I select music that is appropriate for them from the very beginning. For my male vocal students, I coach them through the voice change, which is a rewarding experience for me. My general pedagogical goal is to set students up with lessons that can be interpreted to other parts of life. Learning discipline, focus, problem solving skills, awareness, and interpretation in the practice room is useful in every aspect of life. Another goal is to develop the student in such a way that a passion for music and the arts is grown. Each student is different and has different goals; by trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. Read More

I began taking lessons on the guitar at age 8 and continues with a few different instructors all throughout my life, and still do. I started studying Classical Guitar my Sophomore year of High School. I started teaching the guitar in 1990 at age 18 in a local music store. I was able to perform and teach while earning an Associates in Liberal Arts at The University of Cincinnati, where my intention was to enter their Jazz guitar program as I had begun studying it at their prep department.
