I believe teaching music doesn’t just teach music—it teaches us life skills that are applicable to any field and any situation. Depending on the level of the student and instrument, I incorporate a mixture of theory, aural skills, technique, and repertoire. All of my piano students play Hannon exercises to build up their finger strength and dexterity as well as scales. Vocal students and guitar students likewise learn scales and exercises for the sake of technique. All students start each lesson by practicing reading rhythms at varying complexities, then creating their rhythmic patterns. Read More

For beginning piano students, I use Alfred's All-in-one Piano Course books. These books combine repertoire and theory, thereby cutting down on the number of books a new student needs to purchase. I use a variety of materials for voice students. I may ask that my voice students purchase books of repertoire that contain songs useful for building on their strengths and working on their weaknesses. However, I also have an extensive music library in my home studio. Read More

I try to keep the student as interested as possible, some have shorter attention spans then others and for them maybe i will do 30 minutes instead of 45 minutes. others who are really into it and do not want to leave i may teach them for an hour and that often turns into 2 or 3 hours of just jamming and having fun at no extra cost because without students a maestro is nothing but a musician playing music. i love to play along with students so they are more prepared when they go out and make music with others musicians and they can stay in time with a drummer more easily. My teaching style would probably be classified as Classical. I do teach music reading as a foundation of most of my instruction, however I also work with students who learn better by rote. I take pride in being flexible in my instruction. I do teach from the beginning on how to read music with focus on foundational posture and instrument position. Once that is solid, there is no limit to the students progress. Read More

I am very positive about teaching my students. I have the knowledge to teach about the theory, technique and flow of the music up through the intermediate level. I don't necessarily stay with the music until it is perfect, because as the student learns more they can always come back to it and play it better. I do encourage my students to perform pieces they are doing well with, it's always fun to play for a small group and share each others gifts. Read More
