For beginning students, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements as well as my own individual exercises written specifically for each student's needs as they develop. After they have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire and etudes for their first recital performance. In 2004 Icompleted my bachelor's degree in vocal performance with a concentration in opera from Shenandoah University (so much more engaged, excited, and subsequently successful than I was in my first college experience!). While taking a course about the anatomy and physiology of singing, I found a perfect marriage of my analytical background/skills and my passion for developing people. I started playing music in 5th grade, when I was 11 years old. While I had spent my first year playing trumpet, I had switched to euphonium before I started my 6th grade year and have been playing that and trombone ever since. I spent my high school and community college years playing jazz music on both instruments, and began playing classical euphonium both in high school and when the ensembles became available upon start at TCNJ. I tend to start beginners off with a typical book, usually by Mel Bay or Hal Leonard. I find these books to provide a good basis for music reading and building the required skill set to master their instrument. In addition to those materials, I find music through various on-line sites and from my inventory that students are interested in playing and compliments their abilities. For my adult students, I curtail the lessons to focus on the songs they want to play and understand their goals for playing at this stage in their life. Read More
